Common Reasons to Blur a Photo
- Background blur — soften a busy background to make the subject stand out.
- Privacy — obscure license plates, faces, screens, or sensitive documents (note: heavy blur is harder to reverse than light blur, but for legal-grade redaction prefer a solid block).
- Web hero images — soft, abstract images work well as backgrounds for text overlays.
- Artistic effect — create dreamy, soft-focus looks for portraits or landscapes.
How Strong Should the Blur Be?
Light blur (1-3 px radius) softens fine detail without losing recognizability. Medium blur (4-10 px) creates a clearly hazy look. Heavy blur (15+ px) makes shapes and color blobs only.
Blur Photo — FAQ
Is blur enough for hiding sensitive info?
For casual privacy (covering a face on social media) blur is usually fine. For legal or security redaction, replace the area with a solid black block instead — some blur algorithms can be partially reversed.
Can I blur only one area?
This tool blurs the entire image. For partial-area blur, use the full editor where you can crop the relevant region or paint over a section.
Does blur reduce file size?
Blurred JPG/WebP files are usually smaller than the originals because there's less high-frequency detail to encode.
